Batang Ai HEP Station Manager, Azahari Mokhtar has something to be proud of when PM Najib visited his family's house at Kampung Lintang, Kuching.

During his walkabout to Kampung Sungei Bedil Besar, Kampung Tanjung, and Kampung Lintang, Najib fulfilled that request and found that it (house) was still occupied by Mokhtar’s widow and a son. Mokhtar passed away in 1999 at the age of 82 and leaves behind a wife, five sons and a daughter. Najib wanted all the photographs of the negotiation parties held in the house be displayed in the Homestay House.

Prime Minister Datuk Patinggi Mohd Najib Tun Razak, who visited the house occupied by Norjanah Abdullah, a 76-year-old widower, said the Federal Government would allocate the fund through the (State) Ministry of Tourism and Heritage.

The house, built by the late Mokhtar bin Deli, was used as a meeting place to bring Barisan Rakyat Jati Sarawak (BARJASA) into the fold of the Alliance Party in 1964. Mokhtar, who was then one of BARJASA pioneers, had allowed his house to be used in the negotiation with a team led by the then Deputy Prime Minister, Tun Abdul Razak, who was also the chairman of Alliance Party. Tun Abdul Razak’s team comprised of several prominent UMNO stalwarts in the persons of Ghafar Baba, Aishah Ghani, Ghazali Shafiee, and Musa Hitam. Razak penned in his diary, which Najib later discovered, instructed that should he (Najib) visit Sarawak later on he ought to visit that house.

Najib’s visit to the house was accompanied by Chief Minister Pehin Sri Haji Abdul Taib Mahmud, Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr George Chan, Minister of Housing Datuk Amar Abang Haji Johari Tun Openg, and Semariang State Assemblywoman Sharifah Hashidah.

A wooden house at Kampung Lintang in Petra Jaya will be placed under the Homestay Programme taking advantage of its historical significance.
