LUNDU: U n r e a l i s t i c Ke y Performance Indicator (KPI) set by a company could lead to staff malfunctioning, according to Mohamed Shafie, the President of Union Network International- Malaysian Liason Council.
“Irrelevant KPI would create fear among the staff and they would be working in an unhappy environment.
“Staff who failed to achieve the KPI set by the company could have their services terminated,” said Shafie.
KPI, he stressed, must not be abused to terminate any staff member but rather, should stick to its original aim of enhancing staff quality.
“Termination of staff is not a good idea to be implemented in the current world, especially for Malaysia which is heading towards a high income nation.
“A better resolution rather than terminating non-performing staff is to retrain them,” he said.
Shafie said this at a press confere n c e a f t e r c ha i r i n g the ‘National Conference of Professional and Managerial Staff ’ held at the Retreat and Training Centre at Siar Beach here, yesterday.
Staff termination, he reiterated, is always detrimental to a company so the employer should motivate the non-performing staff rather than to terminate them.
“Employers nowadays are too much profit orientated, so much so that they tend to ignore the feelings of their staff.
“It would be a sad thing if employers in Malaysia continue to terminate their staff rather than to improve their productivity,” he stressed.
Speaking at the three-day conference, Shafie also informed that the union had received many complaints from member associations that the KPI set by their companies were becoming irrelevant and causing depression to the staffs.
The union consists of 66 associations with a total membership of more than 200,000.
“A resolution paper will be sent by us to the relevant departments in Malaysia such as the Human Resource Department, as KPI abusing in the nation is becoming a trend,” said Shafie.
