SIBU: While a certificate of merit may not necessarily guarantee a person’s success it is still a useful piece of document that interviewers want to see as proof of a person’s potential, said chairman of SM Wong Nai Siong board of directors, Vincent Lau Lee Ming.

FOR REMEMBRANCE: A student representative hands over a souvenir to the school principal, Ngu Hua Kwong, witnessed by Lau (centre).
Speaking at the annual prize and academic award presentation ceremony held at the school compound yesterday, Lau, who is also KTS deputy managing director, said it is therefore incumbent on students to study hard so that at the end of it all he would have a certificate showing his inclination.
“Of course, it will not give you immediate success, but prospecting employers will look at your certificate to see whether you fit in or not. Your certificate is among the most reliable pointers as to whether you make the cut or not,” Lau said. He said students should not be satisfied with just academic certificate because to be competitive in the job market they should take up skills training and courses.
These also issued certificates and other forms of documents that employers would pay attention to during interviews, he said, adding that in the fast changing world of today self-improvement and self-upgrading would enhance a person’s marketability.
On Chinese education, Lau said it was fast getting international recognition as Mandarin became the lingua franca of the world.
“With China emerging as a superpower, suddenly every country is leaving no stones unturned to learn and master Mandarin in order to have business dealings with China,” he said.
Lau said China provided such a huge market that no one country dared to overlook China when it came to business dealings.
On the school front, Lau said the management would always have the interest of the students at heart by coming up with various measures aimed at improving the livelihood and welfare of the students.
He said this was evident in the many projects the management had undertaken.
He was also happy to note that the school had been producing satisfactory results. “However, we should never rest on our laurels and be complacent. Instead, we must double our efforts to ensure such results are maintained,” he said.
